Hi guys! I decided to make an animation tut because a few people have been asking about it,
& its fairly hard to explain only by words. This guide is more towards helping to create animated avatars,
but it works for the little animations you might want to add onto other things as well.
You don't have to be an experienced photoshopper to follow this tut, but it does benefit your understanding.

*You will need GIMP or Photoshop to do these animations.

    Animations:

    Slow Build Animation (Heart)

    Flash/Blink Animation

    Flash Color Animation

    Fade Animation

    Dot Animation

    Text Animation

    Moving Animation

    Blur Animation

    Wind Animation

    Tutorials By Others:

    Shine Animation (by Eve/Complexity)

    Sparkle Animation (by Campire931)

    Bounce Animation (by Campire931)

    more animations to come soon!

    Slow Build Animation

I will be demonstrating how to do slow build on a heart,
but you can do it for any shape you want.
*THIS WILL BE DEMONSTRATED ON GIMP.

    Sample:

Step 1: After you are done creating your avatar,
(BG, renders, etc. are already put on), right click + merge visible.
Note: I created my avatar on PS, but now I am opening up GIMP
    to add on the animation.
    [x]

Step 2: Install GIMP 2 if you haven't already,
and open your just made avatar. Follow the steps in this image: [x]
We will be building the outline of the heart first, so choose
the color you want to outline the heart.

Step 3: Fade your ava so you can see it better.
Create a new layer and make your first dot where you
want the POINT (end) of the heart to be. [x]

Step 4: From here on out, make a new layer for each
set of dots listed here. Once you finish Layer 8, you have
finished making the outline of the heart.

Step 5: Now we will do the filling of the heart.
Choose a different color for the fill. I chose pink, lol.

Step 6: Once you're done, go to File, then Save As.
Save the ava where ever you want to, and remember to save
    as a GIF.
    [x]

Step 7: Select Save as an Animation [x]

Step 8: Check "Interlace" and uncheck GIF comment,
if selected. You can choose whether you want it to loop forever,
or not. The "delay between frames" is how fast your animation will go.
I chose 75 milliseconds because its a small heart. The bigger the heart,
the faster the animation should go. The smaller, the slower! [x]

    Final Outcome:

NOTE: Remember, you can make bigger hearts! It'll just take more layers.
I'd love to see your guys' work if you tried out this tut!

      Flash/Blink Animation

I will be demonstrating how to do a flash/blink animation.
*THIS WILL BE DEMONSTRATED ON PHOTOSHOP CS5.

      Sample:

Step 1: Make sure your ava is finished, and you have
put on the object (text, shape, brush, etc.) that you want to flash/blink.
Go up to Window > Animation to open the animation bar. [x]

Step 2: Create a new frame in the animation bar. On that layer (which should be the second), unsee the object that you wish to blink. [x]

Step 3: Now adjust the timing between the two frames.
The smaller the number, the faster it will blink. I chose 0.3. [x]

Step 4: Now play your animation to check and see your result.
If you did this correctly, then go up to File > Save for Web & Devices >
      select GIF format and Save!

      Final Outcome:

      Flash Color Animation

I will be demonstrating how make something flash between colors.
*THIS WILL BE DEMONSTRATED ON PHOTOSHOP CS5.

      Sample:

Step 1: Make sure your ava is finished, and you have
put on the object (text, shape, brush, etc.) that you want to change
colors between. Go up to Window > Animation to open the animation bar. [x]

Step 2: Create a new frame in the animation bar. Have the layer that you want to animate selected on the layers window.
Go up to Layer > Layer Style > Color Overlay. [x]

Step 3: Select the color you want your object to change into.
The animation will go from the first color to the second. [x]

Step 4: Now, adjust the timing between the two frames.
The smaller the number, the faster it will blink. I chose 0.3. [x]

Step 5: Now play your animation to check and see your result.
If you did this correctly, then go up to File > Save for Web & Devices >
      select GIF format and Save!

      Final Outcome:

        Fade Animation

I will be demonstrating how to do the fade animation.
*THIS WILL BE DEMONSTRATED IN PHOTOSHOP CS5.
Note: This tut is one of the longer ones--
its fairly easy, but it takes the most time to do.

        Samples:

Step 1: Make sure your ava is finished, and you have
put on the object (text, shape, brush, etc.) that you want to fade
in and out. Go up to Window > Animation to open the animation bar.
I won't be adding an image cause I'm sure you get the point by now
        from my previous tuts.

Step 2: Under the first frame in the animation bar,
change the delay # to 0.1. Then lower the opacity of the layer
you want to fade in & out to 0% so you can't see it anymore.
Then create a new frame in the animation bar & increase the opacity
of that same object this time to 10%.
        [x]

Step 3: Keep repeating the bolded part of Step 2 (each
time you create a frame, increase by 10% until you reach 100%.
The opacity should look like this for each frame:

Note: On the 11th frame, I usually like to change my delay #
to 0.2 or 0.3 so you can see the image longer before the
        animation repeats.

From here on out, you can stop and be done with your animation,
or you can do the same thing by lowering the opacity backwards,
which will result in 10 more frames. If you choose to do this, it will
make the fade in & out smoother.

If you stop here, then this will be your final outcome!

If you choose to continue and do the same thing backwards,
these are how your layers should look like.

Step 4: Now play your animation to check and see your result.
If you did this correctly, then go up to File > Save for Web & Devices >
        select GIF format and Save!

        Final Outcome:

          Dot Animation

I will be demonstrating how to do a dot animation.
*THIS WILL BE DEMONSTRATED ON GIMP.

          Sample:

Step 1: After finishing your avatar, open up GIMP 2
          and open your avatar.

Step 2: On your layers panel, create a new layer by
          clicking on this icon:

A window will pop up--press okay.

Step 3: Now make the first dot on your ava.
You can change the color of the dot by changing it on the color
pamphlet located on the left. [x]

Step 4: Once you have your first dot, go back to the
layers panel and click the new layer icon.
After you do that, make another dot.

Step 5: Repeat the pattern (new layer + another dot)
until you decide you're finished. You can make the dots into
whatever you want--it doesn't have to surround the render like mine does.
Note: If you're really lazy, space out the dots so it won't take as long.

I chose 100 milliseconds because there are a lot of dots. The more layers,
the faster the animation should go. [x]

          Final Outcome:

Note: I used my dots to surround the picture,
but you can also use them to make shapes or other designs on your ava!

            Text Animation

I will be demonstrating how to do a text animation.
*THIS WILL BE DEMONSTRATED ON PHOTOSHOP CS5.

            Sample:

Step 1: Make sure you have finished your avatar &
put on the text that you wish to animate.

Step 2: Make a new layer right on top of the text you want to animate,
and fill it with a color. I chose white for simplicity. [x]

Step 3: Next, select the gradient tool and set a foreground color.
This color will be the color that will run through your text. I chose red
to white. Set the gradient to "Reflected Gradient". If your gradient consists
of a light color and a dark color like mine, make sure the darker color is
on the LEFT, and the lighter on the RIGHT. You can do this by checking "Reverse". [x]

Step 4: Make a tiny gradient.
(I put a border on so you could see the image better.) [x]

Step 5: Right click on the layer's name.
There should be a "Create Clipping Mask" option available.
Select it--your new layer is now hidden behind the layer under it,
in this case, the text layer. [x]

Step 6: If you did Step 5 correctly, you should have
a tiny little arrow right next to the layer's thumbnail. [x]

Step 7: Now test the layer. Select the Move tool and move
your gradient across the avatar. It should go through your text. [x]

Step 8: Now go to Window > Animation to open up
the animation bar and make a second frame. [x]

Step 9: On the 1st frame, move the gradient layer
to the begining of the text. Select the 2nd frame and move
the gradient layer to the end of the text. [x]

Step 10: Press tween and enter the numbers of frames
to tween between the 2 initial frames. The more # frames makes it
smoother at the cost of file size increase. I put in 15 frames for this ava. [x]

Step 11: Save the file as a GIF and you're done!

            Final Outcome:

              Moving Animation

I will be demonstrating how to do a moving animation.
*THIS WILL BE DEMONSTRATED ON PHOTOSHOP CS5.

              Sample:

Step 1: Make sure you have finished your avatar &
put on the text that you wish to animate.

Step 2: Open the Animation Bar. You should see
a frame already made. If yours says 0 sec, change it to 1 sec. [x]

Step 3: Make a new frame on the AB. Select your layer
of text & select mouse tool. You should see a gray box around
your text. Move your text across one space (← on the keyboard).
Keep repeating this until you want your text to stop moving. [x]

Step 4: This is what my AB looks like after moving
the text a few times. [x]

Step 5: We're finished with the first part (moving forward).
Now we're going to move backwards! Create a new frame and
move your text back one pixel. Keep repeating this (new frame,
→ on the keyboard) until your text is at its original spot it was on. [x]

Step 6: This is what my AB looks like now. Your 1st and last
frame should be the same. Delete your last frame so that now, your
1st and last frame are different (your text is at different spots on ava). [x]

Step 7: Play the animation and see if it looks right
compared to the sample. You can also alternate the speed
of the frames if it looks too fast, or tween () the frames so it'll look smoother.

Step 8: Save the file as a GIF and you're done!

              Final Outcome:

No, you only need one. I just happen to use both because its easier,
but if you want to take the time to figure out how to do some on PS
                    then thats fine too.
