So i'm stuck on picking out a computer I want for Christmas, and stumbled upon an iMac. It's $1200 [yeah, apple is #$%#$%# expensive] and it's got;

21.5 in. monitor
3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1920 x 1080 display
4GB Memory
500GB hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of shared DDR3 memory [pretty much blows, at least it's not ati graphics]

And that's basically it.

Since I can't think of anything better [and i'm a first-time Mac user, wewt?], figured i'd ask you tech-nerds for advice.

kbai.

It can't run audition without bootcamp. And I think you need to buy a windows disc for that.

You could always buy a barebones kit, then upgrade it yourself?

I have a macbook pro and I build my own PCs. I hate macs. ;;. K.
With 1200 you can build yourself a really good computer 8D.

$200 22inch monitor samsung or lg.. is what i would chose.
$100 case antec 900 or something fancy
$200 motherboard X58 chipset motherboard.
$250 processor i7 920 2.66 ghz
$100 1tb Seagate or westerndigital
$100 6gb ddr3 triple channel ram corsair or something
$50 optical drive samsung or lg
$200 graphics card. ati or nvidea. yourchoice. i got my hd4890 ati for 200.

I bought the macbook pro(brandnew)..... to look cool in college! 8D I can't do anything w/ it.. so worthless.. ;(
Cant play games in it unless you install windows on it. when you do play games... i have the nvidea 9400... and it gets really hot.. you
can get maybe 20mins of game play before letting it cool down again.. you cant even watch videos or else it gets hot too..
Ohwell... i got it for 400 bucks 8D

Check out pricewatch.com some good deals there, i got 2 Dvd burns (samsung and LG both under 15$ including ship, then a Blu-ray burner for under $40 from LG)

Tigerdirect just last week had a sale on the samsung w/ litescribe tech for 15 each free ship.

To 69:

Shop around before buying.. hit up tigerdirect.com / newegg.com for some pre-built deals.

Also what exactly are you looking for?

Proc.
Ram.
HDD
gfx card

and so forth.

Mac isn't that good, I guess if your trying to be techy I guess, but I rather just stick with window 7 if you want security, that's what a mac is mostly for.

Or a good gaming computer?

220$-ish:GIGABYTE EP45-DD3R motherboard(good version supportable for all OS except Linux)

300 bucks for a Intel Core2Duo? Might as well spend it on a i7 my friend. :<

For 1200. If you're looking to spend that cash on a good gaming PC, and dont want to have the hassle of building a PC yourself, go to Best Buy and pick up one of the Dell Studio desktops with the i7 920. Really amazing computer. <3 Plus. You can have a manufacture's warranty, something you can't get with a custom built, just in case something goes wrong.

Oh I shall kill the day when my custom built shall die on me. :<

Lol, Kay.. we're getting off topic anyways, Macs ftl.. stay away! :< I have experience!! I own one and they are over priced, for 1200... I prefer custom built PCs incase you want to upgrade later... like a new Harddrive or video card.. where in those all-in-one-PCs.. you get what you pay for and sometimes you can't upgrade them. I worked a computer store and I have customers everyday asking for a powersupply that blew up from like.. an HP.. HP makes powersupplys that are not the ones you can find in any computer store and you would have to order it from HP.

So in my opinion... Custom > all-in-ones-PCs > macs :<...

oh.. 300bucks for a core dual!?... o_o I got my motherboard and i7 for the same price.

/period

My pc~

Coolermaster haf 932 case.
Intel DX58SO x58 motherboard
Intel i7 920 processor 2.66 overclocked to 3.4
Corsair dominator 6gb triple channel 1600mhz
2x250 gb hitachi harddrive in raid 0
1tb westerndigital secondary harddrive
lg dvd drive
ati HD4890 1gb
Coolermaster V8 processor fan
running windows7 64bit.
Zomg... it's really fast 8D! <3

I built this for less than 1200.

Considering you work at a computer store, I'm guessing you went to retailedge.<3 i got my i7 and motherboard at that place.

Sorry. Hard to find someone who also works at an electronics store like I do. xD

Edit:
And now that you posted your rig, I'm positive you went to retailedge.<3 I have a very similar rig, but I sold the "SmackOver" and got a different mobo.

MyRig<3:
CoolerMaster HAF 932
EVGA X58 Mobo
Intel i7 920 OC'd @ 3.9
Corsair Dominator 12GB DDR3 @ 1600Mhz
2x 1TB Western Digital 1TB Black Edition HDD in RAID 0
2x Nvidia 260GTX in SLI
CoolerMaster V8 CPU Cooler
OEM HP DVD+R Drive [Don't know the brand </3 I had it laying around and used it to save costs.]
Windows Vista 64-bit Ultimate

Also built with less than 1200 bucks.

You don't even need to have retail edge to get a good deal. o.O
Microcenter has i7 920s for $200, been like that for months. Add that to an MSI X58 Pro motherboard for $140 that I got from newegg.com and you have an excellent $340 cpu/mobo combo.
